VS 2008 Virtual button pad gaming.

I'm very much a PC gamer. I also, most of the time, enjoy programming. So now I want to combine the two. In most games you can map keys to perform certain functions. For instance the key 'P' pauses most games. I also have a touchscreen and want to create an application that recreates the key 'P' on a button press (or image/label etc press). I thought it would be as easy as looking at a virtual keyboard, changing key images for my own images and bingo! So I downloaded the vbsoftkeyboard example from Microsoft but it doesn't work. It works with notepad, IE8 etc but not the game. However, the inbuilt Win7 OSK does work. Odd.

What is the difference between these two virtual keyboards? (If any one can shed light on it that is)

Secondly, I've searched a million sites and read up on sendkeys, post message, send message, scancodes, hooks, APIs, macros etc, etc. I've read so much my brain has turned to jelly.

All I want is a form that doesn't take focus, with a button that mimicks the real keyboard and sends the key 'P' to the game. Simple really eh? So can anyone point me in the right direction and make the jelly turn back into the synapses it's supposed to be.
